Every child deserves to be treasured, and every person has gifts and capabilities to share.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver
I have been married for 34 years to my husband Craig Benham. We are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Kristen and Bella. Kristen was a graduate of Guthrie in 2015, and Bella graduated in 2024, and is now a freshman at OSU. I attended school at Meeker, Oklahoma, and I graduated from college at UCO with a Bachelors of Science in Special Ed.
I have been teaching for 32 years in the Guthrie School System. I have taught 8 years at Guthrie Jr. High, 19 years at Guthrie Upper Elementary, and this is my fifth year at GHS!. I have coached Special Olympics in Guthrie for 31 years as well. I had the opportunity to attend the 2010 and 2006 Special Olympics National Games as the Asst. Track Coach for Team Oklahoma. In 2000, I was chosen as the State Special Olympics Coach of the year for Oklahoma. As you can tell, Special Olympics is a huge part of my life. I love the fact that it gives my students a level playing field in sports that they may not otherwise participate.
My students are very important to me, as I not only teach academics to them, but life skills as well. I feel that all children can learn, and should be taught to be as independent as possible. My goal for each of my students is that they become productive citizens upon High School Graduation. Hopefully, I would have a small part in the role of getting them there.
